Car Wars: The Conquest of Space

I live in an apartment block with an allocated parking space for each owner. All well and good you may think, but these days families usually possess more than one vehicle and thereby lies the dilemma. Where to find the additional spaces? There are four spare ‘visitor’ spaces, but, given that there are more than sixty individual residences, there is a constant vying for occupancy of these and other spare areas of the access road.
As a retired person, I have most of the day to secure a spare space needed for any visitor I may have calling, but come the end of the working day I frequently observe my neighbours resorting to the most injudicious parking of their cars, or, in many cases, their company vans on bends or footpaths. I have not as yet witnessed any physical or verbal conflicts between residents; after all, it works on a first-come-first-served basis. What does concern me though is that the surplus cars reduce critical access into the service road to the apartments for other vehicles. Thankfully, however, the ice cream van which calls at around 5:30 p.m. each day has not yet failed to gain entry.
